If you’ve started looking into hair extensions, you’ve probably met a long list of method names: tape-ins, nano rings, weaves, keratin bonds, fusion bonds, clip-ins. They all add length and volume, but they work in very different ways, and the right one for a friend may not be the right one for you. Here’s a plain guide to the main methods, so you know what to ask for at your consultation.
Tape hair extensions
Tape extensions are ultra-thin wefts of real human hair with an adhesive strip. A weft is pressed on either side of a thin section of your own hair, so your hair is sandwiched between the two. No heat or glue gun is used in the fitting.
The result: a flat, lightweight finish that sits close to the scalp and moves naturally. A full head can be fitted in around one to two hours, which makes tapes one of the quicker methods. With the right care, the same hair can be removed, re-taped and refitted.
A good match if: you want a discreet, comfortable method and a faster appointment.
Nano and micro ring extensions
Ring extensions use individual strands of real human hair that are pre-tipped. Each strand is threaded through a small metal ring together with a section of your own hair, and a tool clamps the ring closed. Nothing is bonded to your hair, and no heat or glue is involved. Nano rings are the smaller version of micro rings.
The result: a natural, free-moving finish, with each strand placed individually. Because the rings are tiny, they sit flat and are hard to see. Salons that offer them often say they can last several months before a maintenance appointment.
A good match if: you have finer hair, or you want a gentle method with no adhesive.
Weave extensions
A weave is a sew-in method. Your own hair is braided into small sections close to the scalp, and wefts of real human hair are sewn into the braids with a needle and thread.
The result: a lot of volume, thickness and length in a single appointment. Weaves are one of the longer-lasting methods, often lasting up to eight weeks or longer with proper care, and your own hair rests underneath.
A good match if: you want a dramatic change in fullness and length, and you’re comfortable with a braided base.
Keratin bond (fusion) extensions
Keratin bond extensions use individual strands tipped with a small keratin bond. A heat tool melts the bond and fuses it to a strand of your own hair.
The result: the most precise, customised fit, because each strand is placed individually and your stylist controls exactly where volume and length are added. Fitting takes longer than other methods, and the bonds can last up to six months before maintenance.
A good match if: you want a very personalised result and you’re happy for the appointment to take longer.
Clip-in extensions
Clip-ins are wefts of real human hair attached to small snap clips. They fasten to your own hair near the root and come out at the end of the day. A salon can fit and blend them for you, so they sit seamlessly with your hair.
The result: instant length and volume, with no commitment and no aftercare beyond occasional washing. A full application takes around 20 to 30 minutes.
A good match if: you want a temporary change, or you’d like to try extensions before committing to a longer-term method.
How to choose
Every head of hair is different, so your stylist will make the final recommendation. Before your consultation, think about these questions.
- How long do you want them to last? Clip-ins are temporary, weaves last for weeks, and ring and bond methods can last for months.
- How fine is your hair? Finer hair often suits methods that sit flat and don’t pull, such as nano rings and tapes.
- How much time do you have? Tapes and clip-ins are quicker to fit than strand-by-strand methods.
- What look do you want? A big change in volume points to wefts. A subtle top-up in a few places suits strands.
- How much upkeep are you happy with? Every method needs maintenance, so ask how often you’ll need to come back.
What happens at a consultation
New extension clients have a consultation before fitting. Your stylist will look at your hair type, density and condition, talk through what you want, and match colour and length. They’ll explain the method they recommend and the aftercare you’ll need.
Come with photos of the look you like, and be honest about how you normally style your hair. That makes it easier to choose a method that fits your routine.
